Chicago potter inspired by mid-century forms and Chicago's architectural history.

Anne E. Terpstra is a Chicago potter who throws functional and decorative work for the home and garden. She’s always been drawn to mid-century modern design, and this is reflected in the clean lines of many of her forms. She also loves the contrast of glaze against clay body and explores this through a variety of taped lines that let the fired clay play against the surrounding glaze. Many of her designs are inspired by stained glass from Chicago’s own Prairie style, along with art deco and mid-century patterns.

A tape resist technique allows the rich burgundy glaze to contrast beautifully with the exposed clay body beneath on this wheelthrown porcelain vase. The clean midcentury lines of the form act as a canvas for the more complex glaze pattern, which was inspired by turn-of-the-century wallpaper patterns.
