This ceramic lidded jar was thrown as an enclosed form, and only later during trimming was the lid separated from the body. This construction allows for the tight fit and clean line of the dark stoneware jar. The tape resist was applied by hand before glazing, and then peeled away prior to firing to let the brown clay contrast beautifully against the vibrant turquoise glaze.
